We have received details for the Referee Clinic. The cost is $100 per person and will be held on Sunday, March 4th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Carleton University. We highly recommend everyone to attend. The course is extremely useful for all fencers to understand why calls are made and be able to protest if they are being treated unfairly. The course will be run by two very experienced and highly qualified judges, Paul Simms and Michael Ivankovic. Contact Coach Jon to reserve a spot.

The Ottawa Shield was held on Feb 4-5 with many competitors from Kanata showing well. Corey competed in both Sabre & Epee, Alvaro, Vadim & Veronique in Veteran's foil and Emma put in another fantastic performance before loosing 15 - 12 to one of Canada's top senior fencers. Bob brought home a Bronze medal in Veteran's sabre and his performance was matched by Veronique in mixed Vet foil.

Emma Roberts put in an amazing performance to bring home a Silver Medal at the CSC in Montreal. Congratulations Emma!

The 3rd ODFC of the season was held on Sunday, December 11th and Kanata fencers were very strong.

More winners from the 2nd ODFC tournament. In action are Mark (upper left facing camera), Alvaro (upper right photo defending on left), bronze medal winners Alvaro & Mark with coach Jon, and Gold Medal winner Veronique with coach Jon. Congratulations!

A number of Kanata fencers participated in the 2nd ODFC tournament of the season and all performed very well! Congratulations!

Emma Roberts traveled to the Brock Open this past weekend. She competed in both the U15 and U17 Women's Foil. Emma earned both a Silver in U17 and a Bronze in U15!

Congratulations Emma! All the tournament details will be posted at http://www.brockfencingopen.com

The woman's foil team of Emma, Veronique and Sarah did very well at this year's RMC Invitational tournament in Kingston. This tournament had teams from the USA and as far as Great Britain entered. Congratulations girls!

The men's foil team of Jon, Bob & Fernando also placed very well in a very strong field. Later that day, Kanata fielded a sabre team consisting of Jon, Bob, Fernando and Pat who battled their way to 15th spot.

Kanata Fencing did very well at the first round of this year's ODFC Championship. Our girls cleaned up with Gold (Veronique), Silver (Sarah) and Bronze (Maia).

Richard Smith 1951 - 2010

By June McGuire (Ontario Fencing Association) - 22 May 2010

We are sad to announce that our friend and colleague, Richard Smith, has died in Ottawa, after a short illness.

Richard was known in the Ontario fencing community as a "take no prisoners" competitor, who's decades long career culminated in a Mens' Foil Team Gold medal at the 2007 Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Championships in Toronto. As proud as he was of that accomplishment, he was prouder still of the many successes of his fencing students. He was founder and head coach of the Kanata Fencing Club in Kanata, Ontario

Richard was a naturally gifted coach who gave 100 % to his students and their families. The Ontario fencing community will miss Richard's passion and dedication to the sport of fencing, and those of us who were privileged to know him as a friend will keenly feel his loss.

Richard is survived by his parents, Al and Barb Smith and his wife Anne Smith. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Richard's family at this time. To honour Richard's wishes, no funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, cards of remembrance would be appreciated.

Please send to:

Anne Smith, 31 Belmont Ave, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 0T9
