Introduction
Modern Fencing is a fast and exciting sport based on three weapon types; Foil, Epée and Sabre. Matches are played on a 'piste' and are won by the fencer who gets to five (usually) hits first. In 'electric' fencing, the score box lights up when a hit is scored, however 'dry' (non - electric) fencing relies on judges to keep their eye on the proceedings.

The foil originated as a training weapon for duelling. Hits are scored on the torso of the body using the point of the weapon, thus replicating a duel to the death. A fencer who attacks first will have priority over an attack that is started afterwards; i.e. Priority Rule.  Should two fencers attack simultaneously then no hit is awarded. Hits off the target area stop a bout but have no affect on the score. A bout is usually fast with much movement up and down the piste. As with any martial art using weapons, a good sense of distance and timing is required, as well as accuracy.

Equipment
The club provides a range of equipment, weapons & protective clothing to allow fencing in both 'dry' and 'electric' foil. We are also in the process of gathering a small 'lending library' of books and CD's on fencing, which will be made available to all members.
